Convert ESD to WIM

A WIM file is a file-based image format used by Windows to deploy Windows operating systems. It is introduced since Window Vista. A  wim file may includes several images. WIM image can also be bootable. Windows boot loader can boot Windows from a WIM image.

An ESD file is the file used by Microsoft's Electronic Software Download (ESD) software. Microsoft uses the ESD file to distribute Windows operating systems and updates. Compared with WIM file, the ESD file has higher compression ratio, thus the file size is less than that of WIM file. To mount and modify an ESD file, you need convert it to WIM format first. 

To convert ESD file to WIM format, please follow the steps,

  • Run PowerISO.

  • Choose "Tools > WIM ESD Converter..." Menu.

  • PowerISO shows WIM ESD Converter dialog.

Choose the source ESD file you want to convert. The ESD image file information will be listed after you select an ESD file.

Enter the destination WIM file path name.

  • Click "Convert" button to start converting esd file to wim. PowerISO will show the progress information during conversion. 

  • After the esd file has been converted successfully, you should receive a message, "Converting image file completes successfully". You can then mount and modify the WIM file using PowerISO DISM Tool.
